It follows the protagonist a boy named Arc and his friends who are sent on a quest by the kingdom of Palencia, however, in a twist of fate end up having to save the world from The Lord of the Black Abyss and the corrupt empire of Romalia. The games takes place in a post-apocalyptic world 300 years following a war with a being known as The Lord of the Black Abyss. The game would spawn a direct sequel, Arc The Lad II. The game wouldn't see a European release until much later on October 5, 2011, where it was released on the PlayStation Network by MonkeyPaw Games. The game would eventually release in the United States included in the Arc The Lad Collection released by Working Designs on April 18, 2002.

A young adventurer named Arc arrives to the village at the same moment as Kukuru is standing frightened in front of the spirit. As a result, the spirit awakes and threatens to destroy the world.
Kukuru must marry a man she doesn't love, and in order to avoid this marriage, she accepts the offer of the mayor: he asks her to extinguish the flame. A girl named Kukuru lives in a village controlled by the Sacred Tribe - people who guard an ancient flame which contains a powerful spirit that was sealed in it many years ago.
